The West African Human Rights Defenders Network (ROADDH/WAHRDN) organized a workshop on May 26, 2023 in Lomé to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). This event, held at the Hôtel M'Rode in Lomé, brought together Togo's human rights defenders. It was part of the implementation of a joint project run by Protection International, Protection International Africa, Partnership for Justice and ROADDH/WAHRDN, with financial support from Zivik and Protect Defenders. It aims to make Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) actors of peace.
The workshop enabled HRDs to discuss the specific recommendations made at the UPR and to define strategies for their effective implementation.
Participants shared best-practice experiences and innovative ideas that could contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in Togo.
Interactive debates and committee work followed by restitutions marked the session.
ROADDH/WAHRDN praised the commitment of human rights defenders and encouraged them to get involved in monitoring the implementation of the recommendations by the State of Togo.
The organization thanked the technical and financial partners involved in making the event a success.
The UPR is a United Nations mechanism designed to assess the human rights situation in each member country. Togo is preparing for the 4th cycle, and to this end, the State will also be assessed on the implementation of recommendations from the previous cycle.
