The Coalition of Human Rights Defenders in Benin (CDDH-Benin) officially launched the early warning mechanism for human rights defenders (HRDs) on August 26 and 27 in Parakou, Benin.
A mechanism launched during a training workshop dedicated to the launch of the pilot phase of the National Mechanism for the Protection, Alert Management, and Registration of Human Rights Defenders.
This meeting enabled participants to better understand how the mechanism works, to strengthen their skills in receiving, verifying, and evaluating alerts, and to become familiar with the tools needed for case management.
The pilot phase began with the eight focal points in the four northern departments: Alibori, Atacora, Borgou, and Donga. Their deployment marks an important step toward more accessible, responsive, and coordinated protection for human rights defenders.
At the end of the workshop, the president of CDDH-Benin thanked ROADDH for its invaluable technical and financial support, as well as the Beninese Human Rights Commission (CBDH) for its constant support and unwavering commitment to this shared cause. He essentially stated that: “Protecting those who defend human rights means strengthening democracy and the rule of law.”
Training on the implementation of the early warning mechanism continued in Bohicon on September 16, 2026, with training for the focal points.
It should be noted that this project of the West African Network of Human Rights Defenders (ROADDH) is being implemented by the CDDH-Benin.
