In May 2005, in the heart of West Africa, a region seeking justice and dignity, the West African Network of Human Rights Defenders (WANHRD) was born. More than just an organization, it is a collective voice, a space where human rights defenders (HRDs) find protection, recognition, and strength.

The ROADDH brings together national coalitions of HRDs and focal points from 16 countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

The ROADDH has a vital mandate: "to ensure that those who defend freedom can do so without fear."It works to ensure that national and regional policies are aligned with universal human rights standards and that the rule of law becomes a tangible reality in the lives of citizens.

The strength of ROADDH lies in its ability to forge links:

  • With the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, where he serves as an observer and contributes to the NGO Forum.
  • With the United Nations Human Rights Council, via HRC Net, to bring the voices of defenders to the highest international bodies;
  • With national human rights institutions, foreign ministries, and diplomatic missions, in order to translate commitments into concrete actions;
  • With regional and international mechanisms, which offer leverage for protection and advocacy.

These collaborations are not mere institutional partnerships; they reflect active solidarity and a shared conviction that human dignity is non-negotiable.

ROADDH is made up of women and men who, often in hostile environments, choose to defend freedom of expression, justice, and dignity. Their courage is amplified by the network, which transforms their individual commitment into collective strength. Every advocacy action, every diplomatic meeting, every public statement is a spark that lights the way toward a West Africa where human rights defenders are no longer isolated, but supported, protected, and valued. ROADDH is a dynamic actor, a beacon of hope and resilience, which makes international cooperation a concrete tool for protection and change.
